- What’s this I hear about a Soy Bomb? faq id: 202
A guy by the name of Michael Portnoy (*not* Dream Theater’s Mike!) was hired to be an extra on stage during Bob Dylan's performance a couple of years ago. Rather than just stand there inconspicuous like he was supposed to, he went out with Soy Bomb painted on his bare chest and danced some weird kind of crazy dance while Bob played and sang. He was carried off the stage by security and likely arrested for disruption of the event. In any case, with the publicity that it stirred up among DT fans, considering that he has the same name as Mike, Mike became aware of it and made reference to it a number of times (such as during his drum solo on Once in a LIVEtime).
- Why does Mike spit so much during a show? faq id: 259
MP: My great grandfather on my mother's side was a Llama.
- What does Mike look at when he watches a movie or TV show? faq id: 260
MP: I'm a huge film fanatic, and my love for film and directors in particular, is something that's a big part of my artistic drive. I get as much influence and inspiration when I watch a film by David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick or Paul Thomas Anderson as I do by listening to great music. Whether it's acting, the way the camera is utilized, the screen writing, or the sound effects, when I watch a film, I'm watching from all of those angles.
- Would Mike ever want to become an actor for a movie or TV show? faq id: 261
MP: I'm more interested in films and TV from a director's point of view. So even when I watch movies, I don't pay attention to the actors. I pay attention to the way the film is made. So any movie I watch, I watch from the director's point of view. That's the aspect of films that I would want to get involved in.
- What kind of cars did Mike drive in the past and what does he drive now? faq id: 262
MP: I've never been a car fan. A lot of people spend a lot of time, money and energy in it, but for me it's just a vehicle to get from one place to another. So when I go shopping for a car, I say give me the cheapest thing - as long as it has a CD player in it. The car I grew up with is my van - a big van - the Ytse-van. You know, whatever is good enough to get us around. I don't really care about cars.
- Does Mike cook when he's at home? faq id: 263
MP: I don't, but Marlene and her mom both do! They're both traditional Italian moms! Especially Marlene's mom - she makes like 40 course meals! But I don't know how to cook at all, so that's where my love for fast food comes in - when Marlene and her mom aren't cooking, I go to Taco Bell!
- On tour, does Mike eat before or after a show? faq id: 264
MP: I'll eat light before a show, cos that's when dinner is served - after soundcheck. And I'll usually have some pasta, chicken or salad, but usually I don't get my true appetite until after the show and that's when I'm famished. When I get off stage after playing two and a half hours, I'm absolutely starving but unfortunately the good meals are served before the gig. We have burgers, pizza or fast food served after the gig because it's hard to find places to get food after midnight - we always have that in the dressing room afterwards and that's when I chow down.
